WWI During and after WWI the company paid dividends to shareholders of record in the form of 40% in cash and 60% in Liberty Bonds. 1918 Herb Haigh A young Herb Haigh began his career at Chicago Tube and Iron in 1918 with no more than his high school education. By 1919 (20 yrs. old), Mr. Haigh was the manager of the tube department, showing promise and good business acumen. By 1921 (22 yrs. old), Mr. Haigh qualified as a Board of Director by being “loaned” 1 share of company stock to allow him to act as Corporate Secretary. 1921 Relocation In March 1921, the company relocated to 2531 West 48th Street, Chicago, IL Early 20's Herb Haigh's Career By 1922 (23 yrs. old), Mr. Haigh was the Assistant Sales Manager By 1923, Mr. Haigh held 24 shares of company stock By 1924 Mr. Haigh held 45 shares of company stock, 21 awarded for appreciation of his dedicated service to the company. 1929 Cut in Pay In 1929 everyone took a cut in pay. Office workers did paperwork until 4:00 p.m. then put overalls on and loaded pipe by hand. 1933 Tornado hits plant 1933 our plant on 48th St. was hit by a tornado. The northwest corner of our second floor was hit, and the roof was dumped into our office thru the skylights. 1941 Herb Haigh becomes President By 1941 (42 years old), Mr. Haigh became President, dictated by the bank after the Peter brothers de-capitalized the company for their oil drilling venture.
